The Essentials of Great Hymn
Arrangements Review

Do you play the hymns? Are you stuck playing
them out of a hymnal or some other type of sheet music?
Are you tired of all that madness? Well, The Essentials of Great Hymn
Arrangements, by Yoke Wong, will free you from church
sheet music if that’s what you are looking
for.
The Essentials of
Great Hymn Arrangements is a piano course focused on
teaching you how to play hymns or church music. The
concept is simple. Well known hymns are used throughout
the course and arranged right before your very eyes.
Every arranging technique is explained and shown up-close
and in detail.
As with all of Yoke Wong’s piano courses, this
one is beautiful. I enjoyed the layout of the four DVDs
along with the workbook which contains all of the songs
in each piano lesson.
To say there is anything wrong with this set of
piano lessons would be for me to nitpick. I will warn you
of this one thing. Yes, the course does cover hymns in
many different styles, but it is not exhaustive by any
means. A variety of styles are covered which makes this a
great course to really whet the appetite of the aspiring
church musician. Don’t let this fact scare you from the
course however. There is plenty of material here to keep
the average (or if you prefer, the intermediate) pianist
busy for months on end.
Conclusion:
Audio & Video Quality – Very, very, very
nice.
[rating:5/5]
Lesson Materials – The materials are perfect.
All four DVDs are in one case which I like. The lesson
book is formatted very clean and there is an ample
amount of space to write notes as you watch the
piano lessons.

Lesson Instructions – I personally love Yoke
Wong’s approach to teaching. She is always warm and
genuine. She covers a wide range of ideas in this course
that will push your piano playing to new
levels.
[rating:5/5]
Fun Factor – She really delivers her materials
well and doesn’t hold back any of her tricks of the
trade. The lessons are hard to put down because they are
so easy to apply.
[rating:5/5]
Value – There is a total of 6 hours of DVD
material which unfolds to much more when you really start
getting into it. It currently sells for $140 which brings
it to around $23 an hour. I really think a decent teacher
would spend 12-18 hours teaching you what is contained in
these DVDs if you could even find one.
With all that said, I think these lessons are a
bargain. They are a good deal in my opinion.
[rating:5/5]
Yoke Wong’s The
Essentials of Great Hymn Arrangements is a very
impressive piano lesson course. Through and through it
delivers solid lessons, lessons that will make you a
better player, lessons that will help you lead people
into the worship of God.
If you can sight read basic sheet music (3-6
months of sight reading) then you might be ready for this
course. If you play by ear and need a few new moves at
the piano then this will give you tons of ideas. If you
know nothing at all about playing piano then stay away.
This is not for a complete beginner. I think most
people would find this course a pure joy to learn
from.
