Mark Harrison's Contemporary Music Theory Level 1 Review

Qualitative and Quantitative: Mark Harrison brings his cards to the table with his book Contemporary Music
Theory Level 1. This is a fun book due to the fact that it is well written, easy to read, and progresses in a very logical fashion.
Mark doesn't cover it all in this book because it is divided into three separate books. The amount of information he does cover
is huge though so he uses 300 pages to get the information to you. What makes this book so good is how it is setup. He has divided each
chapter of the book into three main sections:
-
Textbook
-
Workbook Questions
-
Workbook Answers
This book works perfect as a self-study course. The book is arranged to be studied over the course of ten weeks. First you read,
then you apply, and finally you grade yourself. There is even a complete glossary of terms in the back that covers all the music lingo your mind
desires.
This book is worth many times more than its weight in gold. The information is clear, concise, and to the point. There are many
charts and pictures so this is a great book for those new to music theory. If your vocabulary lacks that musical language then this book is a
must have for the contemporary musician.
